The one law
Dry sand cannot stand. Every grain has an angle it refuses to exceed. Dry, that angle
is about 33° — a slope, never a wall. Wet it and the water bridges the grains: you can go past
vertical. Wet it too much and it liquefies and runs. The sweet spot is damp, not soaked.
Then pat it. Compaction is the second half of strength — packed sand resists both
collapse and the sea. A patted, damp wall will outlive an unpacked one by whole tides.
The pail
Sand is conserved. Digging fills your pail; pouring empties it. You are not making sand —
you are moving the coast around. Dig your moat where you want a moat and the spoil
becomes your keep.
The sea
Waves break where the water goes thin, and they eat the base first. Undermine a wall and the
wall falls on its own — that is the simulation, not a script. A moat spends a wave's
energy; a seawall (a long, low, packed berm on the seaward side) turns it. Build both.
Water flows downhill and carries sand with it. A moat that drains landward will carve your
own castle out from under you.
